Sock Note 03 - Knitting Socks with Variegated Hand Dyed Yarn - A Simple Sock Recipe

If you’re new here, you can read more about my knitting journey here

This sock sample was knitted using my Harvest Flame yarn, a variegated colourway full of warm tones. To help the colours stand out, I paired it with Vanilla, a soft off-white contrast.

I also tried this sample using Teal and Pearl Grey, but I found I preferred the Harvest Flame version. The variegated yarn really brings the pattern to life although that is, of course, just my personal preference.

For this sock sampleI used a 1x1 rib, which isn’t usually my go-to. I find that once it stretches on the leg, it doesn’t always return to its original shape as well as a 2 x 2 rib. However, it works nicely here and gives a slightly different finish.

If you feel like giving this sock a try, this is the method I used.

Needles:
2.5mm – 25cm circular needle
2.75mm – 25cm circular needle for the stranded colourwork
2.5mm – 60cm circular needle for the heel and toe (magic loop)

Cast on 60 Stitches (or your usual number, divisible by 4 for the colourwork)

First 3 rounds in contrast colour

Then continue rib in main colour to approximately 3.5cm

Knit the leg to 11cm, incorporating the chart A pattern

I used a short row heel, following the method by Purl Together on YouTube

For this sample, I used two colours, changing yarns after the last twin stitch row.

After the heel I use chart A to the top of the foot and chart B for the sole of the sock. Continue until the foot reaches the desired length the finished with a wedge toe.

This sample was a lovely way to explore how different yarn combinations affect the overall look of a sock. I particularly enjoyed seeing how the variegated Harvest Flame interacted with the contrast colour.
